Air Seperation

A wide variety of industries use purified nitrogen, oxygen and argon, which are produced by separating these components from air. For example, large air separation units (ASU) are required for steel plants to provide a large volume of oxygen.

Currently, one new application in particular requires a huge air separation plant: an IGCC (Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) process. An IGCC process is a more environmentally beneficial means of producing energy from coal. It essentially turns coal into gas (called synthesis gas or syngas). Impurities can then be removed from the syngas prior to combustion, reducing emissions of sulfur dioxide, particulates and other harmful materials.

The IGCC process requires compression of large volumes of air to feed a Separation System (main air compressor) and Recycle/Booster (booster air compressor). For this application, an integrally geared centrifugal compressor is used.

Kobelco integrally geared centrifugal compressors are capable of handling 300,000 m3/hr (120,000 acfm) flow rate per unit.
